Myths vs. Facts

🧠 Myths vs. Facts: The Truth About Speed Bumps in Farragut View Subdivision

Clearing up the confusion, the half-truths, and the outright lies.

đźš‘ MYTH:

“Emergency vehicles can drive over speed bumps without slowing down.”

FACT:
EMS personnel and the Fire Chief confirmed this is false.
Ambulances are required to stop at every speed bump to protect the patient and equipment — even in life-threatening situations.

🏠 MYTH:

“These speed bumps were fairly approved by the neighborhood.”

FACT:
The Town of Farragut kept lowering the voting threshold to push these bumps through. What once required a supermajority now passes with as little as 50% of returned ballots — not 50% of residents. That means a tiny group can impose this on 1,000+ people.

♿ MYTH:

“Speed bumps don’t violate the ADA.”

FACT:
They absolutely do — especially when:

  • They cause physical harm to disabled drivers and passengers

  • They’re installed without ADA-compliant alternatives

  • They restrict safe access to public roads
§ 35.151 of the ADA (New Construction and Alterations) supports this claim.

🚸 MYTH:

“The bumps are keeping kids safe.”

FACT:
Kids are actually being put in more danger:

  • Children are seen using the bumps to launch scooters and bikes

  • Drivers veer into the wrong lane to avoid the bumps

  • Speed bumps do nothing to stop reckless drivers who already ignore the rules

🔧 MYTH:

“There’s nothing we can do now.”

FACT:
Yes, there is.
Petitions. Legal pressure. Public exposure.
The Town of Farragut can remove the bumps — they just need to feel the heat.
